Dr Bongani Ndlovu

Dr Bongani Ndhlovu has a Ph.D in history from the University of the Western Cape (UWC), South Africa. He also did his post-doctoral fellowship with UWC. He is employed by Iziko Museums of South Africa as the Executive Director: Core Functions and has more two decades of experience in the heritage sector. Ndhlovu was the course co-convenor for the UCT Michaelis School of Fine Art-Iziko Honours Curatorship Course and is the Iziko facilitator for the project. He has served, among others, on boards of ICOM-SA, ICMAH, Memory of the World in South Africa and is the President of South African Museums Association (SAMA). His peer reviewed publications have appeared in a number of publications. Ndhlovu’s academic interest is history, heritage, curatorship and auto/biographical narratives. His latest publications include a chapter titled “Subjugation, exposure and healing: human remains, museum and indigenous communities”, which he co-authored with Annelize Kotze, and “From graves to official memorials: re-presentations and re-negotiating memorials and monuments in the twenty-first century South Africa”, which he co-authored with Noel Solani. They are published in a book edited by S Ndlovu and A Hlongwane (Skotaville Publishing, 2022), Public history, heritage and culture in South Africa: The struggle continues. Ndhlovu also co-authored a chapter with Ciraj Rassool, “Rethinking the national and the museum at Iziko Museums of South Africa” in a book edited by Raymond Silverman, George Abungu and Peter Probst, titled National Museums in Africa: Identity, history and politics (Routledge, 2022).
